At first it looked as if Fabio Fognini had little desire to compete against qualifier Bernabe Zapata Miralles in very humid temperatures: The first round went to the Spaniard. After that, however, Fognini tore himself a little, took the lead in the second set, Zapata Miralles kept up. In the course of the match, however, Fognini had already received a warning because he shot the ball out of the stadium.
The rally that brought Zapata Miralles 4: 4 in the second act should be the last of the match. The outsider hit the line after a long rally, and Fognini reacted irritably. A few moments later the head referee was on the court, a few moments later the ATP Tour 500 tournament was over for Fabio Fognini: disqualification for unsportsmanlike conduct. The cameras couldn't capture what exactly led to the exclusion of the Italian.
For Fognini it was not the first exclusion from an ongoing competition: in 2017 he was disqualified at the US Open for insulting the chair referee.
