It's been almost a month since Roger Federer announced the end of his career via social media. After that, the 20-time Grand Slam winner got a more than fitting farewell at the Laver Cup in London, especially the emotional pictures with Rafael Nadal went around the world.
Whether Federer will react similarly emotionally at the Swiss Indoors in Basel is currently still in the stars. Because it is still unclear whether the Swiss will officially say goodbye to his home crowd. A corresponding offer of the tournament - reports the "Blick" - is in any case still valid.
Although Federer, who won his home tournament ten times in his career, will not be on the court this year, the field of participants is impressive. With Carlos Alcaraz, the current number one in the world rankings will be in Basel, Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Nick Kyrgios will also be at the Swiss Indoors.
Medvedev chooses Vienna
Originally, Daniil Medvedev should have played in Switzerland, but the 2021 US Open winner then decided to start at the Erste Bank Open, which was taking place at the same time. "He withdrew his registration for family reasons, but instead planned to compete in Vienna," tournament director Roger Brennwald is quoted as saying in Blick.
In any case, Brennwald and his team faced major challenges this year with the organization. "It was a very special situation after the tournament had not taken place for three years." The ATP 500 event in Basel will take place from October 24th to 30th.
