The ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires could experience above-average interest on the ATP tour in the calendar year 2022. There are two reasons for this: On the one hand, Dominic Thiem, the winner of the US Open 2020, has named for the clay court event in South America - and should make his comeback there, provided the Lower Austrian does not get in competitive form in time for the Australian Open give on the ATP tour.
Another comeback that is at least likely in Buenos Aires is that of Juan Martin del Potro. The Tower of Tandil has not played a match since 2019, but is currently fully training again. And plans to start in Argentina. Tournament director Martin Jaite is hoping for a start of the major winner, a wild card will be kept for del Potro: "Juan Martín del Potro's situation depends on his physical condition. It is a decision that the player has to make when he does believes he is capable of playing, " said Jaite at a press conference. Del Potro himself recently announced on Instagram that he wanted to start in Buenos Aires.

The backing of the government was there, confirmed Jaite: "We are a good candidate to move up from an ATP 250 tournament to a 500 tournament. There is the intention and the project, but nothing has been confirmed yet."
In addition to Thiem, Schwartzman and probably also Juan Martin del Potro, Lorenzo Sonego recently confirmed his start in South America.
