Maxi Marterer has already played against Rafael Nadal on the Phlippe-Chatrier court, in the fourth round of the French Open 2018. Almost three years later, the German left-hander now has to take it on a smaller scale, but the opponent has almost the same charisma as Nadal : Marterer calls on Andy Murray in round one of the ATP Challenger tournament in Biella in Italy.

The three-time winner of a Grand Slam tournament did not come to the Australian Open in time due to a positive corona test. And is now trying his hand at the second level of professional tennis while his old colleagues in Melbourne are on the hunt for the title. Murray had already considered starting at one of the well-known tournaments in Quimper, France, but then decided against it. In Biella, the Scot goes into the tournament as number one.

Marterer is not the only German who is in the main draw per se: Daniel Masur (opened against Stefano Napolitano), Matthias Bachinger (against Adrian Andreev) and veteran Tobias Kamke (against Roberto Marcora) are also in the 32 grid.
