Gerald Melzer passed the test of patience in the final of the ATP Challenger tournament in Bogota with flying colors: The left-hander defeated the Argentinian Facundo Mena 6: 2, 3: 6 and 7: 6 (5). The match had to be interrupted for hours due to rain when the score was 4: 4 in the decisive set.

For his success, Melzer took 80 points for the ATP world rankings. There the left-hander, who was nominated by the Austrian team boss Stefan Koubek for the Davis Cup final tournament in Innsbruck, was ranked 421 before the start of the tournament. The 31-year-old currently climbed to 297th place, making up 124 places with his win in Colombia.

Melzer started its Protected Ranking in Bogota. His Argentine opponent started in fifth place. Melzer probably achieved the greatest coup in round two, when he was able to defeat local hero and tournament favorite Daniel Elahi Galan.
