Hurricane Ian has already caused devastation in the US state of Florida

The fact that a tournament has to be stopped prematurely is a rare event in the international tennis business that can hardly be surpassed. However, exceptional meteorological situations also require exceptional actions - and some of them will probably be needed in the southeastern United States in the next few hours and days.

The reason for the national mess is hurricane "Ian", which caused a complete power failure on the island of Cuba two days ago. In the last few hours, the worrying hurricane then moved over the US state of Florida. Whole coastal towns were devastated, the damage is not yet fully foreseeable.

A premature end for everyone involved

According to the authorities, "Ian" has lost a little momentum, but there is still no time to relax. And that especially in the state of South Carolina, which is adjacent to Florida. According to current calculations, the city of Charleston is said to be exactly in the path that the destructive wind will still tread.

Reason enough for the officials of the ATP Challenger event in the city of 800,000 to cancel the current tournament without replacement. A statement from the organizers read: "Due to the anticipated impact of Hurricane Ian on South Carolina, the remainder of the Charleston Challenger has been cancelled. All players will receive leaderboard points and the prize money for the rounds they have achieved."

With that, the Challenger 80 category event ended in the middle of the eighth finals - USA No.
