Youngster Lukas Neumayer in particular came up with a real surprise: The 18-year-old, who came into the main draw with a wild card, easily defeated the French veteran Gilles Simon 6: 2 and 6: 4. In round two, Neumayer has to deal with a Frenchman again, namely Arthur Rinderknech, who was in first place.
Maximilian Neuchrist also unexpectedly reached the second round. The qualifier won against Zdenek Kolar 7:6 (5) and 6:3.
Dennis Novak, who only left Wimbledon on Friday, completed the Austrian trio in the round of 16. Novak defeated Ivan Ghakov 6-2 and 7-5 and now plays against Dusan Lajovic, number two in Salzburg.
There will also be another local hero on Tuesday: Dominic Thiem meets Filip Misolic in a purely Austrian duel (in our live ticker from 6 p.m.).
