After his triumph in Montreal, Rafael Nadal apparently has enough game practice and confidence for the last Grand Slam tournament of the year in New York: The Spaniard announced his participation in the ATP Masters 1000 event shortly after his fifth triumph at the Rogers Cup in Cincinnati off.
He wanted to take care of his body and maintain good health, said Nadal. The world number two had not started in Ohio last year, but the Mallorcan had to give up against Juan Martin del Potro in the semifinals of the US Open due to knee problems.
Due to Nadal's cancellation, the lower half in Cincinnati in particular is extremely open. The 33-year-old will be replaced by Lucky Loser Mikhail Kukushkin, but Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev shouldn't be too sad about the Spaniard's cancellation either - the two of them can in Cincinnati the chances of a strong performance are very good.
