In his quarter-final defeat in Montreal, the Austrian had already felt tired and had spoken of a cold after the match against Daniil Medvedev. Thiem nevertheless traveled to the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati and wanted to start despite a slight illness.

Now nothing comes of it. In the night of Tuesday the Lichtenwörther got a fever, which made an appearance in Ohio impossible. The 25-year-old had to cancel the event in Cincinnati last year. The Lichtenwörther will not lose points. Despite the cancellation, the US Open are not in danger.

"I also got a fever during the night, so after visiting the tournament doctor I had to withdraw my start today in doubles as well as tomorrow in singles," said Thiem. "I'm extremely sorry, I would have loved to play. But it doesn't make sense. Anything else would be far too risky," added the Lower Austrian.

So it doesn't make sense.

Already on Monday Thiem had expressed doubts about starting: "I maybe trained for an hour today, but I am still far from 100 percent. Of course my goal is that I can play smart on Wednesday. But we will see. I will see that I have two very good training sessions, then it’s double. But I’m not 100 percent sure that I’ll be playing in Cincinnati. ”

Delbonis replaces Thiem in Cincinnati

It was particularly important for him to start healthy at the US Open. "If I do too much too soon, it will have long-term effects on New York and everything that comes afterwards," said the fourth in the world rankings at the compulsory press conference before the start of the tournament.

In Cincinnati, Thiem is now being replaced by Lucky Loser Federico Delbonis. The Argentine faces Richard Gasquet in the second round. How exactly it will continue for Thiem is still unclear. The US Open starts on August 26th - enough time to cure the cold. Last year, the 25-year-old failed in Flushing Meadows in an epic quarter-final against Rafael Nadal.
