After two great successes against Alex de Minaur and Denis Shapovalov, Struff seamlessly continued the performance of the previous two games at the beginning of the match against Goffin. The Warsteiner put the Belgian under pressure, especially with his strong forehand, and secured set one 6: 4.

In the second round, Goffin managed a break to 5: 3, which he then transported to equalize the set. In the third section, too, the tenth in the world rankings initially seemed to be the better man, but Struff was able to make up for an early break and fix the 6: 4, 3: 6 and 6: 4 success with another breakthrough in service.

With the victory over Goffin, the Warsteiner moved into the first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finals of his career. The greatest of all challenges could be waiting for Struff in this. Should Novak Djokovic assert himself against Tennys Sandgren, the 30-year-old would face the Serbian world number one.

While Goffin, last year's finalist of the Cincinnati tournament, was eliminated, the defending champion is confidently in the quarter-finals. Daniil Medvedev defeated Aljaz Bedene, who had defeated Dennis Novak in qualifying, with 6: 3 and 6: 3. The Russian now faces Karen Khachanov or Roberto Batutista Agut.
