The last hurdle on the way to the final is the highly talented Italian Jannik Sinner (19), who Zverev last failed in the last sixteen of the French Open. The Hamburger had won the first Cologne tournament the previous week.

In contrast to the bumpy opening win in the second part of the Cologne double pack against Australian John Millman, Zverev showed a concentrated performance over long distances on Friday, but complained of pain in the meantime and had to be treated for hip problems in the second set.

At the US Open in New York, Zverev had defeated Mannarino on the way to the final after some corona confusion for the French, in the cathedral city Zverev turned his first match ball after 2:40 hours.

Zverev is the only remaining German in the individual competition. In doubles, the French Open winners Kevin Krawietz / Andreas Mies are still represented in the semi-finals, the duo from Coburg and Cologne eliminated Alexander Zverev and his brother Mischa on Thursday.
