Novak, who had defeated Jordan Thompson in two sets in the first round, got a false start against Paire and had to give up his first service game. The Austrian secured the next four games and subsequently won the first set 6: 3.
Round number two continued in the same key: Novak took the first service game from the increasingly listless pair, who also repeatedly entered into discussions with referee Timo Janzen, and quickly took a 2-0 lead. The 27-year-old had to accept the compensation to 3: 3, but hit back immediately and then safely transported the lead to the finish.
With the 6: 3 and 6: 4 success over the world number 26. Novak bought his quarter-final ticket at the tournament in Cologne. In the round of the last eight, the Austrian will face Marin Cilic or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Friday.
