"I only trained on this pitch for an hour this morning, but I've adjusted to the conditions well," said Novak after the game during an interview on the pitch where he was wearing a SK Rapid Wien mask. It was Novak's ninth career win over a top 100 player. Most recently he succeeded against Pablo Cuevas at the Davis Cup in March.
Novak was the last player to move into the main field. In round two, Benoit Paire, number four of the tournament from France, is waiting. The only duel between the two to date was decided by Paire at the US Open 2018 in four close sets.
