French Open eighth-finalist Daniel Altmaier (Kempen) can no longer build on his brilliant form from Paris in everyday tour life. The 22-year-old also lost his opening match at the second ATP tournament in Cologne with a downgrading 1: 6 and 0: 6 against the Belarusian Egor Gerasimov, after Altmaier had his first match after his surprising successes a week ago at the tournament premiere in the cathedral city Paris lost and missed the round of 16.
Gerasimov, number 87 in the world rankings 37 ahead of Altmaier, will face the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime after his victory in the top 16. Marin Cilic, who was ninth, also lost on Monday. The 2014 US Open winner, who was in a mid-sized crisis, lost to Steve Johnson 6: 7 (3) and 4: 6. The number eight of the event, Adrian Mannarino, however, had a clear 6: 2 and 6: 2 victory over Alexei Popyrin.
Due to Altmaiers Aus, only the first Cologne winner and US Open finalist Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) and Davis Cup player Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) represent the German colors at the bett1Hulks Championships in Cologne. Zverev is already in the round of 16 thanks to an opening ticket, while Struff has to face the Italian Cagliari finalist Marco Cecchinato in the first round.
