Dennis Novak left chances of the semi-finals in Cologne

It's not often that Dennis Novak receives a warning. When the score was 3: 4 in the third set, the Austrian thrashed the ball into the audience after a volley was awarded, referee Carlos Bernardes exercised his office. It would have been another possibility for a re-break after Novak had already led 2-0 in the decisive set. Davidovich Fokina came back and won after a playing time of 1:55 hours with 3: 6, 6: 2 and 3: 6.

As after the first round defeat in New York City, Novak will struggle a little after this math. In the second movement, the Spaniard made a shabby impression, taking a longer toilet break before the third act. After a cold start, Davidovich Fokina came back and will now play against Alexander Zverev on Saturday, against whom he had no chance at that US Open.

Novak takes 45 points from the first of the two Cologne tournaments for the ATP world rankings and gross prize money of 9,240 euros. In the previous rounds, Austria's number two had won against Jordan Thompson and Benoit Paire without losing a set.
