ATP Cup: The bonus points system is back!

Theoretically, 750 points are available for a single player at the ATP Cup. But practically nobody will reach this number.

Glorious times were until the 1980s: Who has earned a win against a world ranking first, who got once again a few ATP points on top. Quite generally, successes against highly ranked competitors were rewarded with bonus points, decreasing after the chart placement goes without saying. The ATP Cup, which will be held in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth on January 3, 2020, is now undergoing a brief revival of the system.

The fact that fewer points are awarded for match wins in the group phase than in the final knockout rounds, is easy to understand. But already in the first matches successes weigh with varying degrees of difficulty. What makes a good impression on the Austrian team that has been drawn into a group with Argentina, Croatia and Poland: a potential conqueror of Dominic Thiem, currently fourth in the world rankings, would receive 75 points. However, Dennis Novak beats only 20. The Austrian number two is classified outside the top 100.

The maximum score for a single player is 750 points. But only if he wins all matches. And all opponents are placed within the top ten. That would be impossible in the case of Dominic Thiem again: theoretically, in the preliminary round, 225 points to the disposition. In practice Thiem can only score 65 against Diego Schwartzman, only 50 against Borna Coric and only 35 against Hubert Hurkacz. So altogether 150.

In terms of points, the German group is more honored: with Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, two top ten men are represented, the Canadian (Denis Shapovalov) and the Australian (Alex de Minaur) number one lie between the places eleven and 20. So in a win, you score 65 points.

The calculations in double are simpler: the points are awarded independently of the opponents. An unbeaten pair that has played all the matches, including the final, continues with 250 points to the Australian Open.
