Five out of eight - and then divided in such a way that there could be a purely US semifinals at the ATP Masters 250 tournament in Dallas. Hopes for a home win in Texas are not unfounded, the last two local heroes to make it to the quarterfinals were Reilly Opelka and Jenson Brooksby on Thursday (local time).
One of the victims was Cedric-Marcel Stebe, who lost 6:7 (3) and 6:7 (8) despite an inspired performance against Opelka. Stebe had qualified for the main draw, as had Austria's Jurij Rodionov, who lost to Vasek Pospisil in the round of 16 after failing to convert a match point. In any case, Opelka, the number two of the tournament, now has to play against Adria Mannarino, who had no problems with Yoshihito Nishioka. Mannarino had just failed in Montpellier last week with a crash against Alexander Zverev. Pospisil faces John Isner in the Quarterfinals.
Fritz Favorit to win the title
Returnee Jenson Brooksby, who had to forego the trip to Australia, quickly found his groove again in Dallas. Brooksby won against Andreas Seppi 6:3, 3:6 and 6:3 and meets Jordan Thompson in the quarterfinals.
However, the safest bet for a semi-finalist from the USA is at the top of the tableau: That's where tournament favorite Taylor Fritz meets his compatriot Marcos Giron.
