In the end, Dominic Thiem collected 561 points in his comeback season. In the end, the two semi-finals in Gijon (loss to Andrey Rublev) and Antwerp (loss to Sebastian Korda) were the result highlights of the year. Hopefully good enough for a permanent place in the Australian Open tableau (Thiem is currently 106th in the ATP world rankings), good enough for the ATP in any case to have the 2020 US Open champion as one of six candidates for nominate for the Comeback Player of the Year award.

However, the competition is tough. And there is first and foremost Borna Coric, who sensationally won his first title in an ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. Also nominated is Andreas Mies, who won the titles in Barcelona and Munich with Kevin Krawietz and just barely missed qualifying for the ATP Finals. Another doubles specialist was considered in Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Stan Wawrinka might have a say as well, although the season certainly hasn't gone according to plan for the three-time Major champion. The 37-year-old Swiss ended the year in 157th place in the ATP world rankings.

The sixth candidate is the Chinese Yu Wibing. Who started the year as number 1,121. And finished in 119th place.
