As is well known, Dominic Thiem had to postpone his comeback planned for the ATP clay court event in Cordoba (Argentina). The protracted wrist injury has healed completely, but another ailment came up during the preparations in South America. In the sports program "Sport & Talk im Hangar 7" on Servus TV , the former number three in the ATP ranking spoke about the current injury and what the next few days and weeks could look like.

"It's a ligament strain between the index and middle fingers. It may take a few days, but it may also take two weeks. The problem is when I play it gets stronger again. That means I don't have to do anything for two or three days and then see how it develops," said Thiem in the video chat from Argentina. It remains to be seen whether the 2020 US Open champion can return to the tour in Buenos Aires next week: "I can't say anything about it at the moment, but after three or four days I can give a new update, as it will be in the bottom line goes on.”

In the direction of summer, completely the same as before

In any case, Rafael Nadal's incredible Australian Open success gives the Lichtenwörther new courage for his career: "It's definitely an inspiration. I'm also 100 percent sure that I'll come back with my old strength." But Nadal has also shown that a comeback only makes sense if you're 100 percent ready. Players like the Spaniard, Federer or Djokovic only play such tournaments if they are absolutely ready for it. Austria's number one also has this thought - hence the renewed postponement of his long-awaited comeback.

Thiem's medium-term goals have already been set: "It will certainly take a while before I'm back in full match rhythm, that will certainly not happen in the first or second tournament. The primary goal, first of all, is to play like I used to, like I used to be in the top three, like I played for the biggest titles, like I went on the pitch knowing I could beat anyone . That is the goal. That's what I work for every day. And if everything goes well, that will certainly be the case in the summer.”
