It is the first award of its kind that the tennis classic, which has been held in Vienna since 1974, has received. Despite the extremely difficult framework conditions, around 60,000 tennis fans attended the Erste Bank Open in the Wiener Stadthalle and at “Tennis 2 Go” last October, creating a great atmosphere with top-class games there. The popularity of the audience in combination with the professional support of the tennis stars and the advantages of the world metropolis of Vienna were the decisive factors for the Erste Bank Open to be named the ATP 500 tournament of the year 2021. The title was won for the first time by Alexander Zverev, who remained successful in the final against Frances Tiafoe.
