Denis Shapovalov only had one ATP semi-final in the calendar year 2021 - nothing will change this week. The omens were so good for the Canadian left-hander, who had traveled to Estoril's ATP 250 event as number one. The declared goal: to equalize the season's best performance, a semi-finals in Dubai.
Of course, little has come of the small break in the last sixteen in Portugal for Shapovalov again, the 22-year-old lost a hot dance with the young Frenchman Corentin Moutet in three sentences on Thursday afternoon.
Garin benefits from abandonment
This means that the start of the European clay court season for Shapovalov has not gone as planned - in the previous week, the world number 14 had to be. clearly defeated his compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime in the round of 16 of the ATP 500 event in Barcelona.
The number two of the Estoril tournament, the Chilean Cristian Garin, has meanwhile reached the quarter-finals. The clay court specialist benefited from a task given by the French veteran Richard Gasquet.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas (Corentin Moutet's next opponent) and Cameron Norrie (Cristian Garin) also made it to the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 event on Thursday. Marin Cilic and Kevin Anderson, as well as Ugo Humbert and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina fixed their meeting yesterday.
