A sense of achievement for Dominic Thiem: After the last few difficult weeks, the Austrian is back on the road to victory - albeit only in doubles for the time being. Alongside Joao Sousa, the 2020 US Open winner won the opening duel with Ben Shelton and Duarte Vale in the doubles competition at the Estoril ATP 250 event.
Thiem, who only had one individual success in the 2023 season, gained important self-confidence for the upcoming tasks. In the first round, Thiem meets compatriot Sebastian Ofner. In the second round, as in doubles, it could go against the American Ben Shelton.
Sousa and Thiem seem to feel quite comfortable in doubles, the duo didn't let anything burn against Vale / Shelton and won confidently 6: 4 and 6: 2. Possible second round opponents are Gonzalo Escobar and Fabien Reboul. Top seeds in Estoril in doubles are Andreas Mies and Hugo Nys.
