ATP Geneva: Stan Wawrinka pulls out injured - French Open in danger?

Actually, it had looked really good for Stan Wawrinka. At the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome, the 37-year-old celebrated his first two successes since his month-long injury break with victories over Reilly Opelka and Laslo Djere. In the week before the French Open, the focus at the ATP 250 event in Geneva, in Wawrinka's homeland, would have been on fine-tuning for the Grand Slam tournament in Paris.

But nothing will come of it, shortly before the start of the tournament it was announced that Wawrinka would not be able to start in Geneva. "Unfortunately, he's injured. That happens," tournament director Thierry Grin told AFP. "It's a disappointment. We're in Switzerland, he won the tournament twice, he was the ambassador for three years," said the disappointed organizers.

Nothing specific about Wawrinka's injury

However, Grin could not find out more about the cause of Wawrinka's cancellation - and therefore also not to what extent the three-time Grand Slam winner at the French Open could be at risk. Most recently, the 37-year-old had to pause for over a year due to two foot operations - and like Dominic Thiem made his comeback on the ATP tour at the ATP Challenger event in Marbella at the end of March.

"Stan the Man" is currently only ranked 361 in the ATP world rankings, but was able to advance to third place in 2014. The Swiss has also managed to get a taste of title honors on the biggest tennis stage - at the Grand Slams - three times. In 2015, by the way, also at the French Open. However, it is currently unclear whether the 37-year-old will be seen at the Bois de Bolougne in 2022.
