Both players exchange two breaks right at the start of the match, but then it was Thiem who made it 4: 3 - even if he had to survive another 0:30.

Overall, both showed a vivid match, Thiem's backhand longline was always magnificent. And there was also a lot of small-small to be seen, also at the beginning of the second round with a break chance for the Lichtenwörther, when both discovered the Mansour Bahrami stop school for themselves and Cerundolo ended his sensitive attempt at passing just wide. The following service game, which Thiem messed up despite a 40-0, was annoying.

But Thiem managed to break again at 3: 3 because Cerundolo ended up missing a forehand by miles. In the end he managed a break to win.

"I felt very comfortable here on the court from the first match on Monday, I feel good control over the ball," said Thiem. A "very important" win, of course, "I'm still trying to get up in the rankings, I'm still outside the top 100. A semi-final in an ATP tournament helps a lot there."

In the semifinals, it's now up against the winner of the match between Andrey Rublev and Tommy Paul ( now live ). Rublev is top seeded in Gijon.
