After his convincing opening win against Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina, Murray had to go the full distance against Pedro Cachin. And thanks to a solid performance in the tie-break of the third set, he was able to prevail 2: 6, 7: 5 and 7: 6 (3). Murray already led 6-1 in the short decision, Cachin came back with two mini-breaks, but had to look after a backhand pass from the Scot as the last point.
After the first matches in Gijon on Thursday, Dominic Thiem now also knows his quarter-final opponent: After the success against Marcos Giron, the Austrian now faces Francisco Cerundolo. The Argentine started as number four. And after a bye, he was able to beat the French qualifier Manuel Guinard 7: 6 (5) and 6: 2. Incidentally, Thiem also had to fight Pedro Cahin this year: on his comeback in Marbella, the 2020 US Open champion lost to the Argentine.
Tournament favorite Andrey Rublev will step in later on Thursday. For the Russian it's up against Ilya Ivashka, not an easy task.
Andy Murray's opponent will be determined in the final match of the day. There Roberto Bautista Agut meets Sebastian Korda.
