Gilles Simon falls out of the top 100 after more than 15 years

July 19, 2021 was a black day in Gilles Simon's almost 20-year career. The man from Nice had to say goodbye to the top 100 tennis athletes after more than 15 years. The Frenchman achieved his last match success on the ATP tour at the beginning of April at the clay court event in Cagliari, Italy, where he defeated local hero Stefano Travaglia 1: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 in round one.

No fixed ticket for the US Open?

On January 30th, 2006, after leaving the third round of the Australian Open, Simon crossed the magic hurdle of the "best 100" and stayed in this elite group for an incredible 807 weeks, or 5650 days. With Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Richard Gasquet and Fernando Verdasco, there are currently only five active players who were able to stay in the top 100 of the ATP rankings longer than the 36-year-old from southern France.

The French federation nominated Simon for the Olympic tennis tournament, after which it is questionable whether the 14-time tournament winner can get a permanent place at the US Open or has to go to the qualification mill for the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. The former number six in the world rankings has earned a total of 15,622,583 US dollars in prize money in his career to date.
