Even younger sports fans will probably remember the only meeting between Dominic Thiem and Hugo Gaston at the French Open 2020 so far. The game was played in the fall, Thiem had just won the title at the US Open, Gaston took advantage of the deep run and set what felt like a new world record of attempts to stop. Thiem pulled out of the affair in five sets, but had to pay tribute to the hardships in the quarter-finals against Diego Schwartzman.
Now there is a second match between Thiem and Gaston in Gstaad. Under completely different conditions: Thiem is on his way back to the top of the world after the good performances in Bastad, but had to use his protected ranking for a place in the main draw. Gaston, on the other hand, starts as number seven in the 250cc tournament. And will probably have to come up with something new - because in the height of Gstaad it will not be so easy with the stop balls.
Ruud tops seed list ahead of Berrettini
Should Dominic Thiem clear this initial hurdle, there would be a duel with either Federico Delbonis or Mikael Ymer in round two. In the quarterfinals, Roberto Bautista Agut might be waiting, against whom Thiem had won in three sets in Bastad.
The tableau of 28 is led by defending championCasper Ruud in front of Matteo Berrettini . These two will also be at the start in Kitzbühel the following week. Dominic Thiem too, of course.
