Stan Wawrinka cannot and will not be too satisfied with the first few weeks of his return to the ATP tour. Only once in his seven tournament appearances has the Swiss managed to win two matches within one event. The yield is extremely poor for the three-time Grand Slam winner on grass and clay court.
After the next first round defeat - this time at the ATP 250 event in Bastad - Wawrinka is now pulling the ripcord: and ending his 2022 clay court season earlier than planned. Instead of starting in his home town of Gstaad, the Swiss will now prepare for the hard court swing in the USA, at the end of which the fourth and last Grand Slam tournament of the year, the US Open, awaits.
Warinka skips Gstaad
"It's been a long road back to recovery and I'm getting better by the day," Wawrinka said on Twitter on Wednesday. "Even though I'm happy with the progress, I know I'm not where I want to be and where I need to be to compete at the highest level and win consecutive matches." That's why he decided to skip the ATP 250 event in Gstaad.
According to Wawrinka, he only wants to go out on the pitch in his home country if he has the feeling that he is really competitive. And that is currently only the case to a limited extent. "I'm investing in myself and in the process to get back to the level I played before my injury. Hopefully we'll see each other in beautiful Gstaad next year. In the meantime I'll keep working hard for the rest of the season . The next stop is the US swing."
