Alexander Zverev opens in Hamburg

A little dream comes true for all German tennis fans! German number one Alexander Zverev returns to his hometown after three years and serves at the ATP Tour 500 tournament in the Hanseatic city. The 22-year-old receives a wildcard from tournament director Sandra Reichel for his start at the most traditional German tennis tournament, which takes place from July 20 to 28. Zverev is thus also filling its German circle in 2019: The 22-year-old has already given his playful business card in Munich, Stuttgart and Halle / Westphalia this season.

Organizer Peter-Michael Reichel visited "Sascha" Zverev at his residence in Monte Carlo on Tuesday and concluded an agreement with the fifth in the world rankings to start his home tournament. "We have maintained intensive contact with Sascha for many months. He has repeatedly emphasized how much he loves Hamburg and how much it would mean for him to come back to Rothenbaum. When he decided not to start in Washington this year, we deepened the discussions again and are very happy that we have now reached an agreement, ”reports Peter-Michael Reichel of the successful discussions on the Côte d'Azur.

This is the first time in three years that Zverev, who grew up at UHC Hamburg, is returning to his hometown. At that time, in the summer of 2016, the incumbent ATP world champion still ranked 27th in the ATP ranking. Now the eleven-time tournament winner presents himself to the Hamburg audience as a seasoned world-class player on the ATP World Tour. After the Austrian French Open finalist Dominic Thiem (ATP 4) and the Italian Fabio Fognini (ATP 9), Zverev is the third top ten player to have confirmed his commitment to the 2019 Hamburg tournament. The Hamburg tennis fans can look forward to the best field of participants of the past years when they visit Rothenbaum.
