Amazingly, Thiem and Rublev were able to start their game on time: for the first quarter-finals of the day, only 90 minutes were buffered, but Nikoloz Basilashvili was in a hurry against Jeremy Chardy. And the match of the Austrian tournament favorite against the 21-year-old Russian went off in two sets: Rublev prevailed with 7: 6 (3) and 7: 6 (5).
Thiem got off to a good start, leading twice with a break in the first set: 4-2 and 5-3. But both times Rublev immediately equalized, taking the swing into the tie-break, in which the Russian dominated with serve and forehand.
Thiem too faulty in the tie-break
In the second round, Thiem gave his opponent the first break chance with a double mistake at a score of 2: 3 - but thwarted it with a serve through the middle. For Thiem, there shouldn't be a single opportunity to serve Rublev throughout the set. In the tie-break, the Austrian was again prone to mistakes, Rublev was able to use his third match ball.
In the semi-final on Saturday, the winner of the match between Fabio Fognini and Pablo Carreno Busta is waiting for Andrey Rublev.
