Fognini and Kohlschreiber have not had any success in the last few weeks: After his first round at the US Open against Vasek Pospisil, the long-standing German number one lost right at the beginning in Kitzbühel, against the Italian teenager Jannik Sinner. Fognini also delivered a disappointing performance on his comeback after two ankle injuries at the Generali Open, losing to Marc-Andrea Huesler in two sets. And things didn't go much better in Rome either: The local hero lost his opening match against Frenchman Ugo Humbert.
He will now challenge the top seeded Daniil Medvedev in the first round of Hamburg. Stefanos Tsitsipas, number two in the ATP Tour 500 tournament at Rothenbaum, will play against the British Daniel Evans, defending champion Nikoloz Basilashvili will face Roberto Bautista Agut, Jan-Lennard Struff will play against Karen Khachanov. Yannick Hanfmann was assigned an interesting task with Gael Monfils.
In the qualification competition, the Austrian Lenny Hampel prevailed against Marvin Möller. And it shouldn't be the only defeat for the German players: Milan Welte (against Jiri Vesely), Mats Rosenkranz (against Gilles Simon) and Kevin Krawietz (against Pablo Cuevas) also had to say goodbye to the qualifying tableau.
