Aslan Karatsev and Andrey Rublev did not manage to survive the tennis year 2021 unbeaten: The two Russians, who only competed together in Doha but won the title there, also ran a successful run in Indian Wells. In the final, however, there was nothing left for Karatsev / Rublev: The two single aces were defeated by pair skating specialists John Peers and Filip Polasek with 3: 6 and 6: 7 (5).

However, Karatsev and Rublev did not allow themselves to be dismissed entirely without resistance: After winning the first set, Peers and Polasek hit the match twice in the run and thus the title, both times they had to accept a re-break. In the end, however, the sixth joint appearance was enough for the first championship at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

As in the singles, where two surprise candidates, Nikoloz Basilashvili and Cameron Norrie, contest the final, this final was not necessarily to be expected in doubles either. Peers / Polasek defeated the big favorites Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic in the quarterfinals, while the second seeded pair, Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, lost to Tim Puetz and Michael Venus in round two.
