Andrey Golubev and Alexander Zverev will face US players John Isner and Jack Sock in the Indian Wells semifinals

To put it bluntly: Alexander Zverev didn't exactly cover himself with glory in the singles at the ATP Hard Court Masters tournament in Indian Wells. After a bye in the first round, the German number one lost his first match against Tommy Paul (USA) 2:6, 4:6, 6:7 (2). 2022 has not been the season of the 24-year-old from Hamburg so far: A disappointing defeat in the round of 16 at the Australian Open against Denis Shapovalov was followed by a lost final at the ATP 250 event in Montpellier (4: 6, 3: 6 against Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan ).

The freak out and the subsequent disqualification in Acapulco were the negative highlight of the current season so far. If you thought Zverev was on the upswing after the two victories in the Davis Cup qualifying duel against Brazil, the combined event in the Californian desert brought the above-mentioned disillusionment. In the doubles competition, on the other hand, the German number succeeds in at least a partial rehabilitation, because the third in the world rankings is already in the semifinals with his partner Andrey Golubev (Kazakhstan).

First doubles final without brother Mischa?

There, however, the two have to deal with the local heroes John Isner and Jack Sock, who took the first seeded Croatians Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic out of the tournament in the first round. The Australian Open winners Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios were also not very happy with the US duo and lost in straight sets.

Zverev/Golubev had the nominally weaker teams as opponents in the tournament so far - in chronological order these were: Daniel Evans / Karen Khachanov, Marcelo Arevalo / Jean-Julien Rojer and Talylor Fritz / Tommy Paul. Success would bring Zverev his eighth doubles final on the ATP tour - his first at a Masters event and also his first without brother Mischa as a partner.

Here the double tableau from Indian Wells.
