Jeremy Chardy just wanted to take a short paternity leave

The ATP balance of prize money for Jeremy Chardy in his career so far shows almost ten million US dollars. Chardy entered the professional circus in 2005 and has since won exactly one title in singles: 2009 in Stuttgart, at that time still on sand. Chardy is ranked 59th in the current ATP world rankings, the 33-year-old's last match against David Goffin at the Australian Open. And lost smoothly.

Chardy then voluntarily opted out of the game: his wife Susan gave birth to their first son, kindly on February 12, when Chardy also celebrates his birthday. What was designed as a short parental leave could now degenerate into unlimited free time. The uncertainty at Chardy, who wanted to make his comeback in Indian Wells, is great, as is the case with many colleagues on the ATP tour.

Chardy has no points to defend

"I no longer know whether I am unemployed, on paternity leave or a tennis player," Chardy told L´Équipe. “A lot of players want to talk about it. It is not our fault what is going on. When many tournaments are canceled, it can be difficult if you are not an employee. It can also be complicated with the ATP points. ”Chardy does not say the latter out of his own interest: in 2019, he had only taken 55 points in Indian Wells and Miami, in Monte Carlo it was already over in the first round.

But of course Jeremy Chardy does not close his eyes to reality. “The entire economy is suffering. And we too. If we canculate our fifth largest event like this, it's only because we expect difficult times. ”
