Six weeks after his last appearance, Daniil Medvedev has successfully started preparing for his title defense at the US Open. After his involuntary Wimbledon break in Los Cabos, Mexico, the 26-year-old Russian prevailed 6: 4, 6: 3 against Australian outsider Rinky Hijikata and thus achieved the 250th win of his career.

"If someone hadn't told me a few days ago, I wouldn't have known about it," said Medvedev after his milestone: "It's nice, but I want more."

Medvedev was not allowed to serve at the classic lawn in Wimbledon due to the sanctions against Russian professionals, but he will again be one of the favorites at the fourth Grand Slam of the year in New York from August 29th. Last year he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final and celebrated the first major triumph of his career.

After the first preparatory match, Medvedev was now satisfied. "It's definitely not easy to start again after a break like this, especially when you're playing your first match on a hard court in a long time," said the Muscovite, who now meets Lithuania's Ricardas Berankis.
