After losing the last 16 in Rome, Dominic Thiem decided to play the ATP 250 event in Lyon before the French Open in Paris. On Saturday the draw was held in the third largest city in France and it didn't mean it very well with the Austrian who was in first place.
Thiem, who like all four top seeded players initially enjoys a bye, meets Cameron Norrie or Corentin Moutet at the beginning. In particular the British world number 49. has shown his good form so far this clay court season (quarter-finals in Barcelona, finals in Estoril) and will go into the game as the favorite against Moutet. But also the world number 68. from France is known for its extremely uncomfortable game.
Tsitsipas as a favorite
Should Thiem, who won the title in his only appearance in Lyon three years ago, take his opening hurdle, he could meet Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals. For his part, the South Tyrolean also had a difficult draw and faced Australian Open semi-finalist Aslan Karastev in the first round. Possible semi-final opponents Thiems are Diego Schwartzman, seeded third, and Karen Khachanov.
The favorite to win the tournament in Lyon is Stefanos Tsitsipas . The Greek, who, like Thiem, is equipped with a wildcard, plays in round two against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Tommy Paul. After that, Gael Monfils (quarter-finals) and David Goffin (semi-finals) could wait for the fifth in the world rankings.
