"Ferru" fought his compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut 6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 4 and remains in the race at his last tournament.

While in the first two rounds one break was enough to win the set, Ferrer took the lead twice in set three - but always had to accept the equalization. Another break to 4: 3 then brought him to the finish with his third match ball.

"It was a great win for me in my last tournament. Roberto is a good friend, so I'm sorry for him," said Ferrer.

Will the 37-year-old continue? Possible. Ferrer will meet Alexander Zverev on three from Wednesday at 9:30 p.m.

With the last he fought a few close battles, three of them in the current season. At the Hopman Cup in Perth, Zverev had the upper hand with 6: 4, 4: 6, 7: 6 (0), in Acapulco he won with 7: 6 (0), 6: 1. At the last meeting in Miami, Ferrer won 2: 6, 7: 5, 6: 3 against the ailing German.

"I will fight to the very last point," promised Ferrer.

In the official head-to-head, Zverev leads 4: 3.
