Arnaldi won 6: 3, 6: 4 against the French Open finalist from 2023 - who still seems a bit off track this season.

In the meantime, Arnaldi scored 17 (!) points in a row.

Ruud had recently won the ATP tournament in Estoril, but hadn't hit much before. One reason, as he recently explained: the show fight series in the winter of that year with Rafael Nadal, which caused him to postpone his pre-season preparations to the Australian tournaments. A mistake, as Ruud said.

22-year-old Arnaldi, on the other hand, who failed to qualify, will break the top 100 for the first time in the week after next with the points from Madrid.

Arnaldi: "Played the best match of my life"

"He probably had a little more pressure," said Arnaldi at the end. "I played freely and delivered the best match of my life."

Arnaldi now meets Jaume Munar.
