After his early retirement in Indian Wells and Miami, Alexander Zverev wants to gather some match practice before the big tournaments on sand start.
Last week, Zverev was training again at the second home in Monte Carlo, where he will also be starting from April 14th. Before that, he is due to appear in Marrakech, where he recently accepted a wildcard.
Zverev, third in the world rankings, meets Uzbek Denis Istomin at the 250 event. In a direct comparison, Zverev leads 1-0, the only encounter of the two was won by the German in 2015 in Cincinnati in three sets. Istomin is currently number 102 in the ATP ranking.
In the further course, Zverev would meet Jaume Munar or a qualifier, in the quarterfinals, strictly according to the seed list, the Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert would wait in a possible semi-final of the British Kyle Edmund.
Fabio Fognini is placed on two, thus a possible final opponent.
Also there: Philipp Kohlschreiber, who meets a qualifier, and Mischa Zverev, who has to play against Taro Daniel. Both have landed in the lower half of the tableau.
Cedrik-Marcel Stebe before comeback
Interesting first-round duel: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, via wildcard in the field, plays against the long-injured Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, who is part of his protected ranking.
Stebe is playing his first tournament since the Australian Open 2018. Over the past few years, back problems, an inflammation of the pubis, lumbar spine problems and groin surgery have stopped him. In 2018 he underwent two operations on the right wrist, and a third in February 2019. After his last comeback he had increased to 78th place in the ATP ranking, currently he is no longer listed in the ATP ranking.
