In the first quarter-final of the day, Frenchman Bonzi surprisingly won 6:1 and 6:3 against Aslan Karatsev, who was fourth seeded. The 25-year-old is building on his recent strong performances - 6 Challenger titles in 2021, plus a seventh last week in Cherbourg. In Marseille he eliminated Majchrzak and Herbert. The win against Karatsev is the first success against a top 20 player.
Upper semi-final still open
Bonzi will meet Russia's Andrey Rublev for the first time in the semifinals (Saturday, 3 p.m.), who had to go through three sets against Lucas Pouille, but ultimately won (6:3, 1:6, 6:2). Rublev was eliminated by eventual tournament winners Felix Auger-Aliassime in last week's semifinals in Rotterdam.
In the upper half of the tournament, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Roman Safiullin, as well as Felix Auger-Aliassime and Ilya Ivashka are still in the running.
