Top favorite Hubert Hurkacz has reached the final of the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Marseille: In the first semifinal of the day, the Pole beat the Kazakh Alexander Bublik, who had regained his strength, 6: 4, 7: 6 (4). The match, which lasted 1:33 hours, was not stingy with magic strokes worth seeing from both players, but the current world number 11 had the better end.
Participation in the semi-finals of the indoor hard court tournament in southern France was an important sign of life for Bublik, as the fickle 25-year-old had not been able to win a single competition game in the current season. But even for the strong West Slavs, reaching the final is the best result so far in 2023 - in Rotterdam the previous week it was already over in two sets in the second round against Grigor Dimitrov.
Premiere between Hurkacz and Bonzi
The 26-year-old from Wroclaw will face Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in the final on Sunday afternoon, who defeated his compatriot Arthur Fils 6-4, 6-4. Fils, only 18 years old and coming into the main draw with a wildcard, surprisingly took old champion Stan Wawrinka out of the tournament in the quarterfinals 6:2, 6:3.
For Bonzi it is the second title match after the final defeat at the beginning of January at the ATP hard court event in Pune, where he lost in three sets to the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor - so the south-east Frenchman is still missing an ATP title. Hurkacz, on the other hand, could lift a trophy for the sixth time in his career. There have not yet been direct encounters between the two finalists.
