Taylor Fritz, there were no two opinions on Friday, was the better player in the first set of the quarterfinals at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. Fritz had several break chances against Daniil Medvedev, the Russian remained toothless and harmless as a setback. And then won the tie-break with 7:1, followed by the second act with 6:3. Which increased Medvedev's career balance in the short decisions in the 1000s to 20: 6.
In Cincinnati, the tiebreak against Fritz was the first of the tournament, most recently in Montreal Medvedev won the first set 7: 6 (2) against Nick Kyrgios, but then lost the match.
"It's great, because tie-breaks are a nice thing," Medvedev explained on the court. "We call it a lottery, and I think that's a bit true." In 2019 he already had a good series , the world number one continues. "I don't know if it was eight or twelve in a row. You win some, you lose some. But 20:6 is a good record. And I'm happy about that."
Medvedev with a strong record against Tsitsipas
Against Stefanos Tsitsipas, his semi-final opponent in Cincinnati tonight (live on Sky from 9 p.m.), Daniil Medvedev has played four tiebreaks so far. And won three of them. The last at the Australian Open in early 2022 in the semifinals, which Medvedev finally won in four sets. Overall, he won seven out of nine matches against Tsitsipas.
The Greek seems to have found his groove again in Cincinnati. Firstly in singles, where he won against John Isner in three sets. But also in doubles, where he also reached the semi-finals with random partner Holger Rune. And there he meets Tim Pütz and Michael Venus today.
