This is probably not how Jannik Sinner imagined his 22nd birthday: The newly crowned Toronto champion lost to Dusan Lajovic in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati 4: 6 and 6: 7 (4). The South Tyrolean looked battered throughout the game and was apparently struggling with thigh problems.

Lajovic meets Taylor Fritz in the round of 16, who defeated Lorenzo Sonego 6: 4 and 7: 6 (1). Fritz' compatriot Tommy Paul also made it into the round of 16 with a 6-1 and 7-6 (4) win against Ugo Humbert week in Toronto.

Hurkacz beats defending champion Coric

Meanwhile, Stefanos Tsitsipas celebrated a 7: 6 (3) and 7: 6 (2) win against Ben Shelton on center court. The Greek will play in the round of 16 against Hubert Hurkacz, who eliminated defending champion Borna Coric 5: 7, 6: 3 and 6: 3. Casper Ruud, on the other hand, did not live up to his role as favorite: The three-time Grand Slam finalist lost to Australian qualifier Max Purcell 4: 6, 6: 3 and 4: 6.

Alexander Zverev had already bought his round of 16 ticket early on Wednesday (local time) . The German Olympic champion is now dealing with world number three Daniil Medvedev.
