Right from the start, the game was characterized by extremely long baseline duels - a specialty of Daniil Medvedev. The second in the world ranked mostly a little safer in these, and accordingly got the first break of the game early. Although Dimitrov managed the rebreak with a sensational backhand passing ball winner, the pressure from the Russian did not decrease.
Medvedev gained the break advantage again in set one a little later, which the 25-year-old was able to transport this time to win the set 6-3. In the second round, Bulgarian Dimitrov was able to prevent an early break - but this changed little at the end. Medvedev got the first break of the set to 4: 3 and fixed the 6: 3 and 6: 3 success with another game win on serve Dimitrov.
Paire beats Isner
The French eccentric Benoit Paire is also in the quarter-finals. The 32-year-old played a lively encounter with the service giant John Isner and finally got the upper hand in three sets. The first two rounds were decided in tiebreaks, the first went to Benoit Paire and the second to Isner. In the third set, an early break resulted in the decision in favor of Benoit Paire, who could not be deprived of the advantage and finally made things clear with 6: 1.
In the quarter-finals, Daniil Medvedev is now waiting for the winner of the clash between Hubert Hurkacz and Pablo Carreno Busta. The Russian suffered such a bitter defeat at the Olympic Games against the latter. Benoit Paire is up against Gael Monfils or Andrey Rublev.
