The longer the start of the individual semi-final between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, the more relaxed Tim Pütz and Michael Venus will have leaned back: Because either they would get exhausted in their semifinals Meet Tsitsipas with partner Holger Rune. Or the Greek would not compete at all. Which Tsitsipas didn't do either.
And so this time Pütz and Venus entered a final without a fight, it will be the sixth of the year. However, the German Davis Cup player and his New Zealand partner have only been able to win one of the previous ones: In Dubai, the two defeated Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic in a nerve-wracking match tie-break with 16:14.
Pütz and Venus successful in Paris-Bercy
On the other hand, there were defeats on the final day in Rotterdam (against Robin Haase and Matwe Middelkoop), in Stuttgart (against Hubert Hurkacz and Mate Pavic), in HalleWestfalen (against Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos) and most recently in Kitzbühel, where Pütz/Venus against the random pairing Pedro Martinez and Lorenzo Sonego lost out.
In Cincinnati, Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury are the top-seeded pair in the final. Pütz/Venus have already played against the two this year: Ram/Salisbury easily prevailed in the quarter-finals of Monte Carlo. Tim Pütz is up for the second 1000m title of his career: he won the first with Michael Venus last year in Paris-Bercy.
