Bitter defeat for Alexander Zverev ! The German number one lost in the round of 16 of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells against Daniil Medvedev 7: 6 (5), 6: 7 (5) and 5: 7. So the Russian could celebrate his 17th win in a row. Most recently, the world number six from Moscow won the events in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai.

In the round of 16 at Indian Wells, Medvedev initially did not present himself in the form of the previous tournaments. Zverev, who showed aggressive tennis from the start in Stadium 1 and made the first break to make it 3-1, was also responsible for this. Medvedev knew how to equalize this immediately and fend off three set balls in a row when the score was 5: 6, but in the tie-break Zverev then used his fifth opportunity to lead the set 1-0.

Medvedev is again upset about the space conditions

As in the third round against Ilya Ivashka, Medvedev, who had never reached the quarter-finals in Indian Wells in his career before this season, was enraged by the slow conditions in the Californian desert. "It's a shame for sport, this court," complained the 2021 US Open winner.

In his first two service games of the second round, Medvedev defused nine breakballs before twisting his ankle in the sixth game and having to have his right ankle treated. During the rally, however, the 27-year-old seemed unaffected by the problems.

So again a tiebreak had to bring the decision. In this, Medvedev took a quick 4-1 lead and equalized after around two hours and 20 minutes of play to make it 1-1 in sets. And the sixth in the world rankings also transported the momentum into the third section.

Zverev bites but doesn't reward himself

Medvedev broke Zverev to make it 2-1, but the German Olympic champion countered at the last moment and equalized to make it 5-5 after defending against a match point. Only to give up his serve again afterwards - with a double fault. Medvedev did not miss this opportunity after that.

After three hours and 17 minutes of play, Medvedev converted his second match point to a 6: 7 (5), 7: 6 (5) and 7: 5 success. In the quarterfinals he meets Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who defeated Cristian Garin 6:3 and 6:4.
