Taro Daniel remains a loyal companion of Andy Murray in this tennis year 2022. The Japanese and the two-time gold medal winner faced each other for the third time in the current season, with 1: 6, 6: 2 and 6: 4 Murray is in took the lead in the internal balance sheet with 2-1 victories. Which also meant that the 34-year-old was the fourth active player to win at least 700 individual games on the ATP tour.
Roger Federer is right at the top of this ranking with 1,251 victories, although the active status of the Swiss player is delicately questionable. Rafael Nadal can already celebrate victory number 1,044 in Indian Wells today, Novak Djokovic holds 991.
Andy Murray celebrated his last two round anniversaries against Kevin Anderson: The 500th match win came in 2015 in Miami, number 600 followed almost a year and a half later in Cincinnati.
Murray now against Bublik
If you thought Andy Murray wouldn't care about numbers this late in his career, you'd be wrong. “That was a goal I set myself at the end of last year,” explained the Scot on the court. “There are a lot of wins. Of course I'm very happy that I did it. And now let's attack the 800.” The first hurdle on the way there will be the Kazakh Alexander Bublik.
"I wouldn't say my career has been all about match wins, numbers and stats," Murray said. "But as you get older and get closer to the end of your career, there are certain milestones that you would like to reach. Reaching that number (700) is a really good achievement. Now I notice these things. I look at the players around me, at their numbers. It gives me extra motivation and encourages me to climb even higher and win more matches.” Andy Murray is currently ranked 88th in the ATP world rankings.
