ATP Masters Indian Wells: Carlos Alcaraz - "It was just bad luck"

Carlos Alcaraz was given a fairly demanding task at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells with Thanasi Kokkinakis. You don't have to worry about your health, said the Spaniard in the run-up to the event.

Mats Wilander, the great Swede, said before the start of the Australian Open - when Carlos Alcaraz's cancellation was already certain - that slowly you have to worry that a young man like Alcaraz is so often plagued by injuries. Carlos Alcaraz, who may one day be a great Spaniard, said the following on the subject a few days ago in Indian Wells: "I'm not worried at all." That he will be plagued by the same injury over and over again? "It was just bad luck."

Well then.

Alcaraz came back to the ATP tour in Buenos Aires, he won the tournament, he didn't always shine. The procedure in Rio de Janeiro was almost the same, although Cameron Norrie thought it would actually be cool to rewrite the final script. And so the Brit won in Rio against an Alcaraz who was no longer quite fit.

Alcaraz does not see himself as the first favorite for the title

One title, one final. So everything ok? Not quite. For example, in the match against Dusan Lajovic under the Sugar Loaf, Carlos Alcaraz revealed fairly obvious weaknesses on the backhand side. Not really big news, but as long as the 2022 US Open champion's footwork is right, Alcaraz can usually plug the small holes in his game.

Can Thanasi Kokkinakis tear these holes particularly deep in round two of the tournament in Indian Wells? The Australian has the weapons but lacks consistency. On the other hand, Kokkinakis is already well-rehearsed and had no problems at the start against Brandon Holt.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz, seeded in first place in Indian Wells, is stacked low. A little bit. "I don't consider myself a favorite to win the tournament because it's been a long time since I played hard. There are many good players in the draw who have a chance of winning the tournament. But I'll say this: If I see a chance for the title, then I'll grab it."
