Great success for Andy Murray : The former world number one defeated Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling generation duel after a little more than three hours of play with 5: 7, 6: 3 and 6: 2 and is thus in the third round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament from Indian Wells.

Murray lost a 3-0 lead and a set ball in the first set, but survived a few dicey situations in the course of the second half. In the third section, the three-time Grand Slam champion quickly turned onto the winning road thanks to two early breaks. An even greater challenge could await the 34-year-old in the next round in the person of Alexander Zverev.

A compatriot Zverevs, however, retired in the second round. Jan-Lennard Struff had to admit defeat to Fabio Fognini 4: 6, 6: 4 and 3: 6. The 30-year-old was one of three seeded Italians who qualified for the third round on Sunday (local time): In contrast to Fognini, Jannik Sinner (6: 2 and 6: 2 against John Millman) and Matteo Berrettini (6: 4 and 7: 5 against Alejandro Tabilo) without losing a set.

Lorenzo Sonego, who was in 17th position, was defeated by Kevin Anderson in two tiebreaker sets. The South African will now face Gael Monfils, who left Gianluca Mager only six games. Meanwhile, Albert Ramos-Vinolas caused a surprise: The Spaniard beat US Open semi-finalist Felix Auger-Aliassime 6: 4 and 6: 2.
