The doubles tableau in Indian Wells is traditionally extraordinarily well filled, many single players also register for pair skating, after all, the onward journey to Europe is not immediately threatened, but the reasonably manageable trip to Miami. But no one is in a hurry to do that.

And so almost every year in Indian Wells there is a showdown between the best doubles specialists with pairings that rarely come together. This will also be the case in 2023. And Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev in particular didn't just get it.
- Like last time in Dubai, Zverev plays with buddy Marcelo Melo. The first-round task couldn't be more difficult on paper: it's against first-seeded Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski.
- Dominic Thiem has arranged to meet Casper Ruud and has to start against Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic. The two Croatians are ranked fourth in Indian Wells.
- The meeting of four individual players could be interesting for other reasons: Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov, joint winners of the Davis Cup in November, are playing against the youngsters Holger Rune and Ben Shelton.
- Interesting from a German-speaking point of view: Lucas Miedler, last winner in Acapulco alongside Alexander Erler, plays with Cameron Norrie against Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski. The latter have reached the final of the Australian Open this year.
- And Kevin Krawietz gets to deal with temporary partner Fabrice Martin with Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov. Tim Pütz, Krawietz's regular playmate, is known to be taking a baby break.
- Oh, yes: Jack Sock and John Isner signed up together again. What this can lead to was seen last year: namely tournament victory. However, the first task is not easy: Isner and Sock have to face Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer, the reigning French Open champions.
